At dawn Edda stirs and leaves her room,
walking out onto the balcony nearby.
She looks around like always and goes back
inside. She passes through the kitchen and
heads downstairs, pulling on her armor and
yawning as she goes.
She stands in front of the kegs, collecting
her daily supply of potions, when she hears
someone whispering right outside the door. She
freezes, midpour, and listens as closely as she
can. As hard as she tries, she cannot make out
the words being spoken.
Rummaging through her bag, she quickly locates
one of her weapons and holds it tight. She crouches
down slightly and makes her way to the door very
slowly. She notices she is only hearing one voice,
and that the voice does not sound threatening.
She steps into the shadows, quietly opens the door,
and makes her way out into the front yard. Her eyes
search the place, trying to find the source of
the soft voice she heard earlier.
Finally, she steps over to the little stable and
peeks inside. She sees a young girl, who appears
to be alone. She cannot see her face, just flowing
greenish blue hair with a matching dress, a funny
helmet, and an assortment of swords, strewn around
the ground around her.
Edda reveals herself and clears her throat. Instead
of being startled, the young girl slowly looks up
with interest. When their eyes meet, they both gasp.
Neither speaks for several minutes, both girls locked
in each other's gaze.
The first to pull herself together is Edda. She blinks
once and begins to speak to the girl, asking her who
she is and where she has come from.
"I was brought here by the Shiny Boy. I was sleeping
in Zento and he said I could sleep here instead. He said
his girlfriend was kind and generous, and that she
lets people stay in her home, if they do not have a
place to go"
Edda thinks for a few moments and speaks again.
"I suppose by "Shiny Boy", you mean Padruig Kinley?"
"Yes, yes that's his name! I always forget it!" She squeaks.
Edda eyes the girl and smirks a little.
Then she says "Would you care to tell me what your name
is? Perhaps I have heard of you.."
The girl pushes her green hair aside and quietly says
"My name is Camilla. I am here to study the way of the
samurai. I am a student of Sensei Po"
Edda nods and smiles at her. "I don't know if you have
noticed, but.. "(at these words, she removes her ninja hood)
"We look exactly alike, but with different hair and eyes. Do
you know where you came from? Where your parents are?"
Camilla sighs and beings gathering things and whispering
to herself again.
"Are you okay?" Edda asks her.
Camilla speaks slowly "My parents and I have had a bit
of a problem lately. I left them. We all used to live happily
in a distant land. I rode my horse a long time to come
to Makoto-Jima, but it was the first place I came to where
I felt at home."
"May I ask.. Why you felt you needed to leave?" Edda asked,
with some concern and interest.
Eyeing her with slight doubt, she begins to speak
again "They do not want a daughter who fights and puts
herself into danger. All my life, I have done what they
wanted, worn fluffy dresses, and picked flowers. But
now I am entering adulthood and I am ready to take my
own path and they told me....." her sentence drifts off
as she gets distracted by the wind chimes hanging outside
the door.
Edda looks at her, desperate to hear the end of the story.
"They told you..?? Hello??"
Camilla blinks and looks back to Edda and apologizes.
"They recently told me that as a small infant I had a
sibling. But from the very start my sibling showed a
great interest in weapons and roughness. It was not
acceptable to them. The day she crawled over to a knife
and threw it at the wall, they abandoned her in Makoto-Jima
to be left on her own, or die, they didn't care which one
it was. After they told me that, my decision was made,
and I left in search of my sister"
As she finishes her story, Edda lets out a long breath
and sits on the stable floor, putting her face in her hands.
Watching in curiousity, Camilla sits next to her, and asks,
quietly. "Are you okay?" When she gets no response she begins
whispering to herself again. She shakes her head "no" at herself
and begins whispering again. Then she nods to herself, and
rubs Edda's back. This startles Edda a little, and she
takes her face out of her hands to look at Camilla.
Camilla notices a single tear roll down Edda's cheek and
frowns sadly at her.
"Did my story upset you?" she asks.
Edda takes a minute and looks at the sky, which is slowly
turning from deep red to light pink, and looks back
to Camilla. "I am your sister" she finally says.
Camilla smiles and puts her arm around Edda's shoulder
"I know" she says. And together they sit and talk about
what they have missed out on for the past 18 years.
