"Hiko!" He heard faintly. "Hiko!" It grew louder. A girls voice, not
just any girl..his sister. He opened his eyes slowly. The light
unbearable, his head hurt and his mouth tasted of...iron? Copper? a young Hiko shook his head free of its sleeping state and
opened his eyes to let the piercing light in.
He quickly sat up screaming at the sight of a large swirling mass of
light and indescribable energy coming right at him. "Seijuro Hiko! why
would you scare me like that?" His sister asked confused. Hiko's eyes
darted left and right, but saw no vortex of (what could only be
described as) chaos, but only her. "I must have still been dreaming." he
thought as his sister spoke. "Mother and Father are waiting for us
Hiko. We must hurry!" She grabbed his hand surprisingly and forcibly
tight as she dragged him out of the house through the field towards the
hill.
As they reached the top shapes of his parents began to form. He gets
closer and sees them wave, motion for him to hurry, all a silhouette in
thanks to the sun at their backs. Excited he turns his head to look at
his sister only to be find himself staring eye to eye with an old,
crazed looking man mumbling words that seemed fa miler but he did not
understand. With fingers of fire he reached for the boy. Hiko trips, his
face hitting the sharp grassy ground with force. But it is OK, his
father helps him up, dusts him off. His mother wipes his tears. He still
cannot see their faces but their smiles, their smiles he sees clearly
and it makes the thought of the crazy man fade.
They all walk to the peak of the hill and stare out over Zento as they
do every week. "The promise of a better life, a better WAY lies just
over those walls children." His father would say. They were not rich,
no, but none in the family wanted for anything. They were happy. He
could not remember a time when they were not. His father made and sold
the finest instruments to be found in all of Tokuno. As his wears grew in fame so did the money the family made. Not to mention Hiko's interest in learning to play each and every one of them if he had say in the matter.
Surprisingly, today, his mother suggest he plays for them. They all sit,
his family's backs still to the sun, their faces still dark.He begins to
play on his favorite lute.
The song is melodic, soft. But it is felt deep, almost painfully so. "How is it I am playing so well?" the boy thinks. "It will be years before I am this good." But the joy in his families motions begins to make his thoughts recede. Then, suddenly, his fathers face begins to distort, twist and takes the form of the unbound creature he seen in the morning. His mother begins to scream fiercely as her skin melts away and begins to reveal the form of a man that seems to be made of fire.
Hiko continues playing only a bit faster now. Fear overtakes the boy, he does not know what else to do. He looks frantically for his sister. He sees
her. She's climbing the tree. "It is to high, she will hurt herself!" He
can only continue to play as he watches, his pace again increasing.
His sister steps out as far as she can before jumping head first from
her perch. The now not-so-young man watches his sister dive. "NO!" He
does his best to scream at the top of his lungs as she begins her decent
but nothing comes out. "This is not what happened!" he thinks as tears
run from his eyes. "This is all wrong!" he mouths while his fingers
strum the lute harder and faster. And just as his sister was about to
hit the ground....
Seijuro Hiko opened his eyes a second time.
